" When it comes right down to it, life is a series of moments -
bite-size chunks of time
that help define us and shape our view of the world around us."
Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family, The Good Dad.

I have received many lovely gifts in my life: personally embroidered wall hangings, pillows, homemade breads, sweets, jams, flowers, and full family meals to name only a few. In hard times people have given, what I considered, large sums of money anonymously, furniture, and even used cars. For these and many more, my goal was to express sincere appreciation to the givers and to use their gifts well.
One gift, however, actually had a substantial influence on who I became - my childhood. Both parents wanted the best for my brother and me; thankfully, my early memories are primarily lush and rich with pleasantries. That all changed when I turned twelve. A closely knit series of events happened which robbed much of our family's happiness. The innocence and family unity was never to occur again. How grateful I am to have had a healthy, strong, and loving early childhood!
Combining the vibrant and cherished gifts of my past with my ever-growing desire to increase the potential and longevity of such a season for others' benefit, I endeavored to make my little family a stronger base from which my four children could have their life experiences launched.
Therein, lies the concept of "Moments". Is not Time an irreplaceable gift? Are not family and loved ones treasures?
Moments in time and loved ones in our midst are "temporary" gifts. Life has an annoying way of changing things, usually when we're not ready.
What can we do to add to that which we have experienced or know to be true, noble, just, pure, lovely, or of "good report",...oh, and fun?
Most special moments don't just happen. With some wisdom, insight, and a little planning, celebrations and remembrances can make lifelong influences for those you love.
Therefore, let us establish yearly traditions that will enable us to educate ourselves and our loved ones, thereby, showing appreciation and striving not to squander our "gifts".
